Redhouse Yacht Club

The Redhouse Yacht Club is a sailing club in Algoa Bay situated in the village of Redhouse (near Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is very much a community sailing club.

The club has a traditional atmosphere and maintains some unique habits, probably formed 100 years ago. Top of the list has to be the serving of tea and cake between races during regular Sunday afternoon club racing. In fact it seems that there are meal-and-drinks-breaks between every race at Redhouse Yacht Club!

Redhouse Yacht Club

The Club primarily caters to dinghy sailors and it sponsors a major dinghy training and racing programme. Redhouse Yacht Club is an affiliate of the South African Sailing Academy and also a member of the International Sailing Federation and South African Sailing.

The climate around Algoa Bay allows for year round sports with river sailing providing a more sheltered environment for smaller craft. There are usually about two races every week throughout the year with occasional larger events including national regattas. Over the years the Club has featured large fleets of diverse dinghies with the predominant race fleets today consisting of Lasers, Mirrors, and Optimists.

Redhouse Yacht Club has enjoyed a recent resurgence in interest from more senior sailors. The Club now boasts at least three fleets in each of the regular club races. The senior sailing squad consists of sailors ranging in age from late teens to a few over 70 years of age. The camaraderie between members is said to be unique to Redhouse Yacht Club. It is apparent both on and off the water with 'old salts' eager to share their knowledge with less experienced members.

The Redhouse Yacht Club junior squad is one the fastest growing and most enthusiastic sporting groups in Port Elizabeth. On Sundays they are often seen out on the water enjoying “sailing school” which is followed by Club racing. The sailing school at Redhouse is well established and concentrates on practical sailing rather than the academics of the sport. The Club owns a fleet of Optimist training yachts that sailing school members may use for a complete season before having to obtain their own craft. Sailing school is held every Sunday during the season from 10am for junior and adult members.

Membership of the Club is open to all and new members are warmly welcomed. Prospective members are invited to enjoy the Club facilities and to take part in Club events for up to four weeks prior to being required to join the club.

While the Club frequently experiences moderate to strong winds, the river environment is ideal for young or inexperienced sailors... the banks are always within reach. The level of safety inherent to river sailing makes Redhouse Yacht Club the best place for a new sailor to learn the ropes and for experienced skippers to hone their skills.
