Overview
A SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructor is appointed to facilitate and assess the SA Sailing Safety Boat Operators Training Course under the SA Sailing National Training Programme (NTP). They are appointed following review by the SA Sailing Training Department. The appointment requires the facilitation of the SA Sailing Safety Boat Operator program in accordance with SA Sailing Course material, assessment process and in line with the SA Sailing Standards.
Prerequisites for Appointment
- Must have completed the SA Sailing Safety Boat Operators Course and be a holder of the SA Sailing Safety Boat Operators Course Completion Certificate recorded with SA Sailing, with the prerequisites in place.
- Must provide a logbook of hours on a powerboat. (an SAPS affidavit may be accepted if no logbook has been kept)
- Include type of boats and size of their motors, with centre console steering mechanism
- Must include where (the waters) hours have been logged.
- Must provide 3 credible references that can attest to practical skills and knowledge of powerboat experience.
- Be a minimum of 25 years of age.
- Strong presentation and communication skills.
- Should have passion and aptitude for teaching and mentoring to up-skill and grow others.
- Should driven to ensure safety as a main priority.
- Have a thorough understanding of the SA Sailing safety requirements and standards for operating a power boat in close quarters of sailing boats, kiteboards, windsurfers and any other water users, to equip candidates and to assist in ensuring all who enjoy our sport, can do so safely.
- Have a proven safety track record.
Terms of appointment or reappointment to SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructor.
Appointment
As this is an appointment, SA Sailing will review and assess candidates using their records in line with the above criteria and application received. The accreditation as SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructor is valid for four years. Renewal of accreditations will be subject to the renewal process in place at that time.
SA Sailing reserves the right to terminate the appointment at any time should a valid a reason arise to support such a termination.
Appointment or reappointment as a SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructor is subject to the acceptance of the conditions outlined below:
Course Scheduling
This appointment allows the Instructor to plan and schedule courses in their personal capacity. SA Sailing may approach any of the appointed SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructors to schedule a course on its behalf from time to time.
In order to be able to issue the SA Sailing Certificates, any courses run will need to be run through the SA Sailing system. Courses scheduled at clubs or centres who have adopted the system can set these up. Where a venues has not adopted the system, these course will need to be added by the SA Sailing staff on your behalf.
Fees and Expenses
SA Sailing will apply an administration fee per student per course. The appointed SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructor has the right to determine any course fee over and above the SA Sailing applied fee.
SA Sailing will collect the SA Sailing applicable fee from the SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructor.
SA Sailing will not be liable for any course costs.
Roles and Responsibilities
SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructor will need to abide to all SA Sailing Safety standards, process and requirements and course content and assessment process.
SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructor need to ensure that any courses planned are published and take registrations within the SA Sailing website and revSPORT platform.
SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructor must ensure that courses are run on boats that have a single motor over 15hp, with centre console steering mechanism, and have a valid and current CoF (Certificate of Fitness). All equipment used through the course should be in a good state of repair and functioning properly. All equipment and course area must be safe.
SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructor must supply SA Sailing with all students written and practical assessment as well as provide student feedback.
SA Sailing Safety Boat Instructor has a duty of care obligation and is thus bound to ensure the necessary regulations and policies are applied, esp. in regards to the safeguarding of people. (see SA Sailing website for the SA Sailing Safeguarding Policy)
