Course Overview

A 3 day Theory and Practical program which aims to teach the basic understanding of the skills involved in Race Coaching. The candidates need to competent racers who wish to pass on their skills and knowledge to up and coming racers. This course covers the skills required to run effective coaching sessions and includes the information required to turn racers into competent coaches.

Day 1

Course Outcome

Participant will be certified and recognised as a SA Sailing Race Coach. The certified SA Sailing Race Coach will be able to act in their own personal capacity as a performance coach in Sailing to work with basic to intermediate level athletes, and be able to train from any of the SA Sailing affiliated clubs, recognised training centres and classes

This SA Sailing certification will be valid for 4 years and will be subject to the keeping of:

  • logbook of coaching hours
  • Updating of coaching philosophy,
  • Athlete development and progress reports
  • When acting on behalf of SA Sailing or its implemented projects, the submitting of athlete progress reports to SA Sailing Hi Performance committee secretary for record keeping.

Prerequisite Requirements

  • Be over the age of 21yrs
  • Have a SAMSA CoC (certificate of competency/Skippers ticket)
  • Have a SA Sailing Safety Boat Operators Certificate
  • Police Clearence 
  • Valid Level 1 First Aid certificate (with drowning and secondry drowning)
  • Have advanced sailing experience in sailing.
  • Have advanced racing experience of at least National level competition.

Course Requirements

  • Complete the online registration process
  • Submit Proof of Payment for the applicable booking fee
  • Attendance on all day is compulsory
  • Expect to act as a sailor by sailing in the provided performance sailing boats (e.g. 420 and/or Laser)
  • Prepare and bring your coaching philosophy

 

What to pack and bring with you:

  • All coaching clothing including buoyancy aid, racing watch, waterproof jacket, appropriate footwear + video camera (if available)
  • Fitness Kit
  • General clothing
  • Note pad and pen
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Essential tools (tape, spare sheets, screwdriver)

 

Post this course the successful candidates will be able to

  • Facilitate performance training in their personal capacity to work towards upskilling athletes in their ability as performance sailors for all levels of participation and championship competition
  • HPComm will look to this group for assistance going forward to facilitate rolling out future projects in line with the strategic objective of developing future medal winners
  • SA Sailing Race Coaches are eligable to make application to SASCOC towards thier accreditation for Sports Coaching Designation
