Workshop Overview
The Regatta and Race Management Workshops are aimed at all levels volunteers who want to become involved in the Race Official pathway. This workshop covers every aspect of Regatta and Race management from event planning through to prize giving and final press releases, giving the volunteer the toolbox to run successful regattas and events. The
Workshop Prerequisites
The Candidate must have familiarised themselves with the following before attending the course:
• The current World Sailing Race Management Manual.
• The current Race Rules of Sailing
• SA Sailing Prescriptions for class championships
• SA Sailing Race and Regatta Management Guidelines
Workshop Program
The current format of the course is an intensive Full 2-day course which starts at 9am and continues until 4 pm each day. Culminating in the Club Race Officer Training Module to prepare candidates to start their Race officer program. Some of the topics that are covered are:
• Guideline plan for a major event organization • Regatta Organizing Committee
• Race Office Organization • The Race Committee
• Judging - The Protest Committee • Umpiring
• Technical Committee • Safety Committee

Workshop Outcome
The Candidates will receive a Course completion certificate of “Race and Regatta Management Assistant. They will have a basic understanding of every aspect of the planning and running of successful events. They will be able to manage the Technical volunteers and give them necessary direction to drive the event processes.
An easily accessible entry into the volunteer pathway of the sport. These Volunteers can now assist Race committees al all levels with the many functions required to run events. Gaining experience to eventually take on the responsibilities of Race officer or Judge.
All accredited Race Officials will need to attend the Race and Regatta workshops to be able to renew their accreditation's every 4yrs, attending these workshops will bring them up to date on the latest Racing Rules of Sailing and the current World Sailing philosophies around Race management and Safety.
This course is run at Club level, please contact your club if there is no scheduled course showing.
Programme Overview
The SA Sailing Assistant Race Officer (ARO) Club Programme is designed to develop assistant race officers to assist at Club and or District level competition and forms an introduction to the formal SA Sailing Race Officer’s framework up to National level competition. The programme is made up of theory-based race and regatta workshop and practical experience with club competition.
Programme Prerequisites
- Be a min of 18 years of age
- Attend a ARO Regatta and Race Management Workshop, facilitated by a Club.
- A portfolio of evidence of having demonstrated capability as an Assistant Race Officer.
- Obtain a letter of recommendation from your club.
Programme Format
The Current format of the programme is a Club run Race and Regatta Management Workshop. SA Sailing certification for this level of training will only be considered on the receipt a letter of recommendation confirming programme completion and endorsing that the necessary standards has been met.
The programme is updated regularly to include relevant aspects of the new racing rules, recommended best practices and any updates to the SA Sailing policies and procedures. As a result, additional modules may become required to keep accreditations active.
Programme Outcome
The successful candidate will be able to assist at club or district competition as well as at higher levels of competition.
On completion, the successful candidate will be awarded a SA Sailing Assistant Race Officer Certificate
Course evaluation
Candidates will be assessed on the evaluation and recommendation from the candidate’s club along with a portfolio of evidence. Written and or practical assessments may apply.
