Benji Daniel and Alex Burger earn qualification spot for Tokyo
Benji Daniel and Alex Burger have made a triumphant return to the country after booking South Africa a spot at the Tokyo Olympics in the 49er class.
Just a year ago, the former 29er world champions (who beat 129 teams from 17 countries for that title) were convinced their dream of competing at a first Olympics was all but over. But the event in which they could qualify finally went ahead last week.

A 14-strong South African team is currently taking part in the eSailing Nations League, which kicked off on 11 January – up against the best virtual sailors from around the world. One of SA’s finest, Pedro De Mello Machado, explained: “We are drawn into a very tough and experienced Team Sailing group of countries and are excited to be part of this league to battle it out against the world’s best eSailors, have fun and make new friends.
