TuksYachting host Inter Varsities TSL

After less than a year of establishment, TuksYachting was ready to host its first regatta. Our home base, PSC (Pretoria Sailing club) at Rietvlei dam would be the venue for our first inter-varsity event.

All hands were on deck by the TuksYachting committee to get the event under way. The event drew 30-plus students from various universities, these being: UP, Wits, UKZN and NWU.

Teams of six (two people on a boat, so three boats per team) would match race each other, and by using the sailing rules, mark traps and team communication, give the other team penalties and beat them over the finish line.

Saturday, 19 October was the first day of racing. Light and switching wind made for interesting conditions. Students and spectators sat on the banks, the atmosphere of lively music, sunshine and happy smiles made it an amazing day out on the water. Evening saw some music and dancing. Potch was the winner of the beer-pong competition.

IMG_0994 (002)The last day of racing, Sunday the 20th, got off to an early start with the hopes of completing the day’s racing before lunch. After some intense racing, the two teams to the finals where Tuks A and Wits A. The final was a best of three and after some great match racing, some good calls by Tuks and a few mishaps by Wits, Tuks won two back-to-back races, making them victorious this year.

The results are as follows: 1st Tuks A, 2nd Wits A, 3rd UKZN/NWU, 4th Tuks B, 5th Wits B.

A big thanks to the TuksYachting committee that made this all possible: Michaela Robinson, Damian Muller and Shaun Johnston. A big thank you must also be given to the sponsors of the event: Murry Coombs, SAS (South African Sailing), JM BUSHA 54, and many others.
